Or even if you agree that the person is wrong, does the comment still affect you deeply, making you doubt yourself? Or worse, is the person saying the negative comment really you, every time you make a mistake or things don't go your way? Many of us have experienced this, and that's where the importance of truly knowing ourselves lies.

A few days ago, a journalist asked Novak Djokovic (one of the best tennis players of recent years) after he lost the Wimbledon semi-final, if he was more competitive this year than last year, referring to the fact that he has won more matches in 2026 than in 2025. However, Djokovic, true to form, immediately interrupted him with a "Incorrect," and as soon as the journalist finished his question, he replied, "I disagree, I am always competitive, I always give my best, sometimes it shows more or less on the outside."“

In this interview, as in others, one of the keys to Novak Djokovic's success can be observed. He has acknowledged that, like everyone, he struggles with his thoughts and that perhaps he has more negative thoughts than most people; however, he has learned to control his mind and no longer remain in that emotional state for long.

So what is the key to Djokovic's success?

Of course, his physical ability, determination, diet, and lifestyle all play a significant role. However, the Serbian tennis player has stood out for his competitive mindset, based on emotional management and resilience. Two factors have been crucial to this:

1. Self-knowledge.

In the interview following his Grand Slam semifinal defeat, when the journalist brought up his identity as "being competitive," he immediately dismissed the comment. It wasn't so much the journalist himself, but the comment that could have been interpreted as a personal reflection. He knows who he is, that he is always competitive, and that he always gives his best. He knows that his results don't define who he is.

What would have happened if he didn't know himself so deeply? He would have confused his worth and identity with his results, and any external comment would only reinforce his distorted self-perception.

2. Take care of your mind.

He knows his results are affected by his thoughts, which is why he was so adamant in blocking the journalist's comment. Throughout his career, he has developed the ability to train his mind to avoid getting stuck in those detrimental emotional states.

The best tennis players train their minds to recover quickly from mistakes—since they constantly deal with frustration—and focus exclusively on the point they are playing. This ability to 'reset instantly' is, in fact, what defines their mental strength. In a sport where there are no ties and every lost point can trigger a spiral of frustration, true talent lies not in never making mistakes, but in the speed with which the player returns to the present.

So what can we learn from Djokovic?

Our identity is not defined by what we do, the results we achieve, or what others think of us. Our identity is connected to our original design, the one given to us by the Creator, but we can only discover it when we begin to peel back the layers our minds have created in response to experiences, such as behavioral patterns we've copied, epigenetics, or everything our mother transferred to us during pregnancy.

One of the best online practices we can adopt to love ourselves—that thing we talk so much about—is taking care of our minds. How? By putting a stop to those thoughts that distort who we really are, our true identity. But if I don't know who I really am, how can I recognize what I'm not, that is, those limiting beliefs? This is why self-knowledge is so important.

Be persistent. Be familiar with failure, not to dwell on it, but to learn from it and move quickly to the next game. In life, as in tennis, there are many things we cannot control, things that can go wrong, and we can even make mistakes over and over again, but what we can do is choose our thoughts so that we can react differently.

Like Djokovic, we all face "external journalists" daily—the opinions, criticisms, and expectations of others—and, even worse, our own inner critic. The difference between being swept away by the noise and standing firm lies in these two tools: knowing who we are and actively managing what we allow into our minds.

Your results, your mistakes, or what others say about you don't define your worth. When you truly know yourself, you create an indestructible shield: you know that your competitiveness, your effort, and your essence remain intact, regardless of the day's score. The next time you face criticism or a bad result, do as Novak does: block out the negative thinking, remember who you are, and keep playing your own game.

If you want to take the first step towards self-knowledge and understand how the PENIEL Method can help you with this, schedule a free, no-obligation consultation. here.

¿Alguna vez te han dicho un comentario negativo acerca de vos mismo y te has puesto a pensar si podrían tener razón? ¿O aunque decís que esa persona está equivocada, el comentario termina afectándote muchísimo haciéndote dudar de vos mismo?
